A Review of Christmas Tree Ornament Kits

I'm here to take a close look at the world of whole Christmas tree ornament kits for 2023. I'll be your guide as we navigate through the various options available, discussing aspects like quality, coverage, price, variety, and the overall appeal and value of these kits. Ornament kits have come a long way from the days of just a few pieces. I'm particularly excited to share the backstory of our own Christmas Crates. It all started with my personal struggle of decorating a second Christmas tree and realizing the need for beautifully coordinated and quality ornaments. We'll also take a look at other providers like Costco, Target, and Decorators Warehouse. While I naturally have a bias towards what we offer at Rockwall Christmas Company, I'll review the others to help you make an informed decision that suits your decorating goals.

Rockwall Christmas Company

Our mission is to simplify and beautify Christmas tree decoration, we take pride in offering unique, high-quality Christmas Crates (Whole tree ornament kits).

  • Quality: We stand behind our ornaments with a three-year replacement policy, you only pay shipping. Our ornaments are made from metal, glass, wood, and shatter-proof materials.

  • Price: While our Christmas Crates may be pricier than options like Costco and Target, they are substantially more affordable than Decorators Warehouse. We've worked hard to bring quality ornaments at an affordable price.

  • Coverage: We have a variety of ornaments (large and small) and every kit has over 100 total ornaments with the average close to 115. Be careful using quantity alone as a coverage metric. Not all ornaments are equal in coverage. The pictures below each use one Christmas Crate (two large boxes). However, many of our customers state they had more than enough as we ship two large boxes of ornaments for every crate. If your tree is larger than 7.5 feet, you may require a booster kit.

  • Ornament Variety: We list the full ornaments including sizes and style for each of our Christmas Crates. However, you will find we use a variety of sizes, materials, and even colors to create depth, balance, and beauty for our Christmas Crates.

  • Theme Variety: With themes inspired by our favorite Christmas carols, our Christmas Crates connect us with our best holiday memories. Themes like O'Christmas Tree, Jolly Saint Nick, White Christmas, and Jingle Bells.

  • Overall Appeal/Value: I believe we have the best overall value and quality. I want your family and guests to say "Wow!" when they see your tree. However, please see our reviews to decide for yourself.

Costco

  • Quality: I found the quality of the CostCo ornaments to range from low to acceptable. The ball ornaments are what I would expect, however some of the other ornaments seem like they may not keep up with the boxing and unboxing of several seasons. The best thing about Costco is their return policy. They generally allow you to return an item if not happy with it.

  • Price: With prices ranging between $150 and $220, Costco's kits are a mid-range option.

  • Coverage: One box of ornaments. Sufficient coverage if planned well, but the individual sizing tends toward small ornaments.

  • Ornament Variety: There were some good variety of ornaments but the kit I viewed did not have any sprigs or sprays. The ornaments also tended toward small.

  • Theme Variety: Unfortunately, Costco only offers one theme.

  • Overall Appeal/Value: Costco's kits are practical, but they may require supplemental ornaments to achieve a polished final look. For budget-conscious shoppers, this could be a viable choice.

Target

  • Quality: Target's Wondershop brand generally has some good finds at a good value. However, I found their ornament kit lacking..

  • Price: With prices ranging from $100 to $175, Target's kits present an affordable option.

  • Coverage: I did not decorate a tree with the Target kit. However, I think it would make a good base if expecting to add many ornaments.

  • Ornament Variety: Target's kits provide a variety of ornaments, though the absence of sprigs or sprays and a tendency toward smaller sizes might limit the final outcome.

  • Theme Variety: Target offers three color-based themes—Red, Green, and White—providing limited design styles compared to others, but at least there are options.

  • Overall Appeal/Value: Target's kits offer affordability, making them suitable for smaller companion trees or as base ornaments that can be complemented with additional decorations.

Decorators Warehouse

  • Quality: Decorators Warehouse offers ornaments of excellent quality, with showcase pieces designed to last several seasons. However, no warranty coverage is offered.

  • Price: With average kits starting at $1200+, Decorators Warehouse's higher prices reflect their in-person store retail model.

  • Coverage: The coverage is what you would expect for a quality ornament kit. You should have no problem with decorating your tree. In addition, you will find a variety of sizes and materials with each kit.

  • Ornament and Theme Variety: Decorators warehouse excels in this category. They have a variety of themes with some feeling more complete than others.

  • Overall Appeal/Value: Very high price makes it hard to see the value, but they do a good job with kits and ornaments.

Explore your options, read reviews, and choose the kit that aligns with your holiday vision and budget. Happy decorating!
